Journalism Makes Latest Trackside Appearance as Pacific Classic Deadline Inches Closer

Multiple Grade I hero Journalism (Curlin) was out over the Del Mar racetrack Saturday morning for his latest move as his connections continue talks about entering in the GI Pacific Classic.

Out on an overcast day, the son of Curlin put in a five-furlong breeze in 1-minute flat, the 30th fastest of 69 that morning at the distance, with regular rider Umberto Rispoli in the irons. The pair went in company with SP Phosphorescence (Fr) (City of Light). It was the longest of his three works at the track in August.

“I thought he went very well,” trainer Michael McCarthy said afterward. “A solid five-eighths with his company. Full of run all the way and a solid gallop out.”

While the conditioner was happy with what he saw, it did not offer a clear answer on how they would ultimately decide regarding a Pacific Classic entry.

“No idea,” McCarthy admits. “We'll talk about it here in the next day or so. See what happens across the country today. Aron's got a lot of moving parts.”

Team Journalism will have to decide by Tuesday as that's when entries will be drawn for the Seaside Oval's marquee race.

Other hopefuls were also spotted on track Saturday morning, namely Ultimate Gamble (Medaglia d'Oro) and GSP Indispensable (Constitution). The former was clocked in a best-of-four six-panel work in 1:11.20 and the latter went five furlongs in :58 flat (2/94). A decision from Ultimate Gamble's camp will also be expected in the coming days.
